The University of Coimbra (UC) has launched the initiative UC Challenges for Global Sustainability. The project aims to challenge High-school Portuguese and Brazilian students, as well as UC students, to learn about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 United Nations Agenda and to develop projects with potential for transformation and replication able to contribute to a better world.

This project is part of the University of Coimbra strong commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 United Nations Agenda. The UC - which has the ambition to be the first national university to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, through the development of an environmental sustainability policy and community awareness - was ranked in 2021 in the top-25 worldwide (and 1st nationally) in the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking, the global barometer that evaluates the performance of higher education institutions in meeting the UN SDGs.
