Pedro Vieira Alberto, Director of the Laboratory for Advanced Computing of the University of Coimbra (UC), has just been appointed member of the Infrastructure Advisory Group (INFRAG) of EuroHPC.

INFRAG counts on 12 members appointed by the Governing Board, and provides advice for the acquisition and operation of supercomputers across Europe, drawing up and regularly updating the multiannual strategic agenda draft for such acquisition.

Created in 2018 and based in Luxembourg, the EuroHPC targets the European Union and participating countries (EU Member States and associated countries such as North Macedonia and Iceland) to coordinate efforts and join resources to make Europe a world leader in supercomputing.

Pedro Vieira Alberto, who is also a professor at the Physics Department of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), believes that this nomination is the recognition of the work developed at the UC in the area of supercomputing and highlights the importance of "being close to the European decision centres and contributing to the development and applications of high-performance computing (HPC) in Europe".

"High performance computing (supercomputing) is one of the pillars of the European Commission's digital strategy, presenting significant development opportunities for the scientific community and for society in different areas, such as energy, health, wildfires and industry, among many others," says the FCTUC scientist.
