A European study has evaluated integration policies of non-EU migrants and refugees in 25 regions of 7 European countries, including Portugal. The Azores and Lisbon were evaluated as having an advanced regional governance integration model. This study, which included the participation of the University of Coimbra, produced the first index of indicators of regional governance of integration, called MIPEX-R.

With the general coordination of The Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions, the study was conducted in Portugal by researcher Paulo Espínola, of the UC Centre of Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning (CEGOT).

Of the 25 regions studied, 12 were classified as advanced in terms of the regional integration model, including the Lisbon and Azores regions, 4 were at an intermediate stage and 9 were lagging behind.

The project, called REGIN - Regions for Migrants and Refugees Integration, was carried out over the past two years and its main objective was to include the integration of migrants and refugees in social cohesion policies at the regional level.
