The Baroque “Joanina” Library of the University of Coimbra was the most direct and recognizable inspiration for the set designed in the Disney film

The film “The Beauty and the Beast” premieres today, 16th March, and you can see the Joanina Library in movie theatres all around the world.

Among all the baroque libraries in the world, the Joanina Library of the University of Coimbra was the most direct and recognizable inspiration for the set designed in the Disney film “The Beauty and the Beast”.

The black lacquered shelves, the gilded woodcarving decoration and the general architecture of the Baroque Library clearly influenced the creation of some of the film sceneries.
