Gabriel Lopes gets World Champion title in China

Gabriel Lopes succeeds Alexandre Yokochi, who took the gold medals in 1985 and 1987, as the third Portuguese medallist in the history of men's swimming.

Gabriel Lopes, student at the Faculty of Sports Science and Physical Education of the University of Coimbra won the gold medal in the men’s 200m individual medley final at the World University Games in Chengdu, China, with a time of 1:59,12.

After Alexandre Yokochi in 1985 and 1987, Gabriel won the third medal in the history of Portuguese men's swimming at the World University Games.

This is Portugal's fourth medal in swimming at the World University Championships, following Camila Rebelo's silver in the same competition.

The FISU World University Games are organised every two years by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). It is the second largest international multi-sport event after the Olympic Games, bringing together university athletes from all over the world.
